Cloud Computing 101: 4 Free Resources That Actually Helped Me Learn

When I started learning about cloud computing a few years ago, I felt like I’d shown up to a party an hour late.

Everyone was already in deep conversation, trading acronyms like IAM, VPC and PaaS like they were inside jokes.

People were casually debating AWS vs. Azure like it was Real Madrid vs. Barcelona all-time head-to-head.

To make it worse, Google search showed me a maze rather than a map.

Every search returned either marketing fluff (”Cloud is the future!”) or deeply technical information written for people who lived and breathed the cloud day in and day out.

No one was writing for someone like me - confused, overwhelmed, but too stubborn to quit.

It took me months to sift through the noise. But I found some gold along the way.

So I’m sharing the “gold nuggets” that genuinely helped me when I was starting out.

No jargon, no ego, just clear explanations with a hint of business insights.

Resource 1 - Cloud Computing Explained

What it is:

My all-time favorite explainer video about cloud computing for any beginner.

It’s a short, simple and beautifully animated video covering the basics: what “the cloud” is, how it compares to on-premise, and why it matters.

Why it helped me:

When i was starting out, I needed something that didn’t assume I already knew anything, especially as an Accounting graduate who somehow ended up in IT.

This video is that.

It’s short enough not to scare me away, but thorough enough to help me finally understand what people meant when they said: “we’re migrating to the cloud”.

Who this is for: Absolute beginner who want a quick, visual introduction to cloud computing (think: Explaining the cloud like I’m 10)

Skip this if: You already know the basics and are looking for something more advanced.

Pro tip:

Since this video was released in 2021, it won’t cover the latest AI services. But as a classic, it offers a rock-solid foundational understanding.

So start here, then move to Resource 2 whenever you’re ready for the AI update and hands-on building.

Resource 2 - AWS Cloud & AI Essentials YouTube Playlist

What it is:

A pretty dang good free 10-hour YouTube playlist that covers cloud and AI from absolute zero.

You learn enough to get started, get enough hands-on experience to keep things interesting, but without getting overwhelmed by the details.

Why it helped me:

Old cloud materials felt like learning history—very boring.

This one combines both cloud and AI in a neat, easily digestible way.

Plus, the last day holds your hand through building a real Gen-AI solution on AWS.

I walked away knowing how to do something.

Who this is for: Anyone who learns best by watching someone build things live.

Skip this if: You’re already familiar with AWS cloud & AI tools. Or if you have a really short attention span. It’s 10 hours, after all.

Pro tip:

This one’s a serious time commitment. Don’t try to squeeze it into one single weekend - pace yourself, one video a day.

And leave the final project for the weekend when you have enough time to really get your hands dirty.

Resource 3 - Cloud Computing Advantages and Disadvantages - CTO Trade-off Guide

Source: Netguru - Cloud Computing Advantages and Disadvantages

What it is:

A comprehensive, no-BS analysis on the real trade-offs of cloud computing.

It moves away from the technical lens and focuses on the bigger picture: management considerations, cost structure, shared responsibility models, and the practical questions that business leaders must answer before committing to any cloud initiative.

Why it helped me:

This blog post pushed me to look beyond the usual “cloud saves cost” narrative and cut through the marketing fluffs that scream “Cloud is here to save the day.”

It gave me a clear framework for deciding when to move to the cloud and when not to.

Who this is for:

Anyone who needs to understand the business case for cloud - not just the technical knowledge.

If you’re in a role where you need to evaluate where your company’s dollars and cents actually need to go, and justify your decisions to leadership, this one is for you.

Skip this if: You’re looking for a quick 5-minute overview. This blog post is multi-faceted, and takes time to digest.

Pro tip:

The “Workload Decision Checklist” near the end is amazing.

It’s the closest thing I’ve found to a practical framework to determine which workloads belong in the cloud and which are better to keep inside your data center.

Resource 4 - Build an AI-Powered Web App on Google Cloud

Source: Google - Building Applications in the AI Era

What it is:

A step-by-step written tutorial that guides you through "create a Google Cloud project" to "here's your real AI-powered live web app" on Google Cloud Platform (GCP).

If you have been curious about GCP or how Gemini AI could help you code, create a search engine, and launch the app, this is it. Bonus - it’s completely free!

Why it helped me:

After all the theoretical concepts, I wanted to actually build something.

This codelab felt like I could get my hands dirty while a trusted tutor held my hand through the stumbling blocks of a newbie.

I walked away knowing a thing or two more about how cloud and AI work together in practice.

Who this is for: Anyone who learns best by building something tangible that you can see and interact with.

Skip this if: You're allergic to coding (even with AI help). This is a hands-on project, not a relaxing read.

Pro tip:

Don’t just walk away because you’re more familiar with AWS or MS Azure.

Give yourself a few hours to work through the process in GCP and experience its leading-edge AI capabilities.

You might be surprised at what you can build.

Where to Start

If you’re starting from scratch, I recommend starting with Resource 1.

It’s a quick but mighty 8-min video that gives you a strong foundation in the technology.

If you’re ready to dig deeper, Resource 2 is right there to help you dip your toes into more technical concepts such as compute, storage, networking and AWS AI services.

For business leaders, Resource 3 is a great read about the business case for the cloud - the trade-offs, the underlying costs beyond dollars and cents, and the questions you need to ask your vendors before signing the contracts.

And if you’re ready to build something, or simply curious about GCP, Resource 4 will take you from complete newbie to a live AI-powered web app.

Your Turn

What have been the best resources that helped you understand the cloud? Or are you still looking for the right one?
